God is real

Some people believe that the notion of a supreme God is ridiculous. Yet, I have to say “some people” are wrong. Rather than to believe that there is no evidence for God, to the contrary, I find that EVERYTHING is evidence for God.

The Bible says that “for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible…“(Col 1:16) Just how He created these things is a matter for discussion, but the take-away is that He takes credit for their creation. This doesn’t mean however that He should be held responsible for the decisions of others.

“In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth.” (Gen 1:1)

The creation account in Genesis offers an accurate high-level description which has stood the test of time, and agrees with modern scientific teaching.

“Now the Earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, and God said: “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening and there was morning–the first day. (Gen 1:2-5)

This is saying, for the uninitiated, that in the beginning, there was no Earth. Darkness was everywhere. and the Sprit of God was hovering over the “waters.” This word commonly translated “waters” is the Hebrew “mayim.” There are other translations for this word, one of which is “transitory things.” So, the Spirit of God is hovering over the “transitory things.” Then, with the Spirit of God in position over the transitory things, another member of the trinity speaks and says “Let there be light.”

While this might not seem like very much, science tells us it was actually quite a bit of work before light was formed. The standard model tells us that at the moment of the big bang, the singularity expanded, the laws of physics were formed, but there was no matter. There was tremendous heat and energy. Temperatures were too high to support the formation of photons (particles of light energy), but as the tiny universe (starting as an infinitely small particle) expanded to occupy a larger space, it also began to cool. As it cooled enough, scientists believe that it became cool enough for quark particles to form, and then with further cooling, for photons and atomic particles to form.

This first period of time (called the “first day”) involved a period of time that is hard to define because it includes time before time began. It began in darkness and ended in light. The expansion of the universe which began on day one continues to this day.

During and after the big bang, the laws of physics came into being. While everything started as pure energy confined in a small space, much of the energy converted to matter. The standard model teaches that much of the original matter was consisted of hydrogen, and some of the lighter elements. With gravity in place, these atoms were attracted to each other and formed stars. The stars not only created more light, they created heavier elements. As they aged and went nova, they scattered their matter across space, and the process repeats. With matter scattered across space, gravity again forms stars and planets. With matter and light in place, we have the stage set for “day two.”

As time continues, we read in the Genesis account where God formed the Earth, continents, plant life, animal life in the oceans and skies, animal life on land, and finally, a special creation: mankind. How God created all of these things is a subject for another day, but the point is that everything that exists was made by God and serves as evidence of God.
