What is God’s agenda?

We say that God created the heavens and the Earth — but why? What was His agenda? This is a very important question. It is perhaps one of the most important questions in the universe for it answers many other questions.

The Westminster catechism answers this by saying that God made man in order to enjoy him. I think there is more to it. He deliberately made a universe, made a planet, populated it with plants and animals, then last, as His crowning achievement, made man. But this was more than just a great accomplishment, it was for a great purpose. It was so that God could have a relationship with him. The entire universe was made, culminating with with man at the end of the creation story, for the purpose of this God-man relationship. God, being a loving person, created more individuals He could love. He existed just fine, alone in the universe. Yet He wasn’t alone. He knew what love was because He is a triune God. The Father loved the Son. The Son loved the Father. They loved the Holy Spirit. But each member of the trinity is different. We read in the Book of Revelation that the redeemed humans are the “Bride of Christ”.

That means there is nothing more important in this universe to God than man, and for us, there should be nothing more important in this universe than our relationship to God.
